Taj Mahauler: We Drive Mahindra's
Diesel Pik-Up, Mike Levine - 2009-08-27
www.PickupTrucks.com
It’s been more than two years since
we first heard Mahindra was bringing small diesel pickups to the U.S.
During that time we’ve covered a steady stream of news about the
Indian company and its American distributor, Global Vehicles U.S.A., but
we’ve most wanted to know: How will these trucks perform and can
they live up to the high expectations of American truck buyers?
To find out we drove two foreign-market
Mahindra trucks – a left-hand drive version of the recently updated
Australian Pik-Up and a Scorpio SUV – down near Atlanta earlier
this week.
The two trucks aren’t identical to
the rigs that will go on sale here – the two-door TR20 and four-door
TR40 pickups (coming in February, starting around $22,000) and the SUV
(due later in 2010) – but they’re close enough so that the
single cab Pik-Up and “mHawk” diesel-powered Scorpio give
us a reasonable idea of what the stateside pickup will be like.
U.S. Importer Says Mahindra
Pickup Has Come A Long Way, Mike Levine - 2009-08-25
www.PickupTrucks.com
It’s been a long wait for Mahindra
to bring its compact diesel pickup truck to the U.S., but execs are saying
that delay allowed them to make sure “they’ve got it right.”
Still, though, the results of safety and emissions test remain unknown,
and could still represent a hurdle to the truck’s arrival on these
shores.
Six months away from selling the Indian-built
pickup, John Perez, CEO of distributor Global Vehicles U.S.A., is bullish
about the trucks’ final preparations and their progress meeting
government certification.
“From where we started to where [the
truck] is today is a huge improvement,” Perez said this week. “Mahindra
has done exactly what they promised to do three years ago. They said they
weren’t going to come to the U.S. market until they had it right.
They’ve got it right.”

The U.S. distributor for India-based Mahindra’s
midsize diesel pickups says the first trucks its sells domestically will
be assembled and exported from Mahindra’s overseas facilities instead
of assembled from knockdown kits in Ohio, as had been originally expected.
The change will subject the trucks to a 25 percent federal import tariff
levied on foreign-built pickups but it’s also expected to expedite
the truck’s arrival in America.
